Asia: Reshaping urban and rural development through planning

As the world enter the “urban era”, both urban and rural areas are facing unprecedented challenges. While the urban areas are overburdened with urban diseases, such as population explosion, housing shortage, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution, the rural areas are also suffering from various rural diseases, such as population decreasing, demographic aging, farmland abandonment, and village decaying. It implies the breaking of the traditional coordinated urban-rural balance to some extent, which dangers the sustainable development of both the urban and rural areas, as well as that of a region or even a country. During this process, planning, as one of the most significant tools of public intervention, play both a positive and negative role in shaping the urban and rural development. As for Asia, which is unique for its long farming civilization in history and notable for its high-density and large-scale megacities nowadays, planning is far more influential. In the new era, how to rebuild a new balance between the urban and rural areas to promote coordinated urban-rural development through planning is a common and urgent issue for all Asian countries. The 14th APSA congress entitled as “Asia: Reshaping urban and rural development through planning” will bring together scholars, students, planners, and government officials from all over Asia to exchange their ideas and experiences on urban and rural development, providing valuable Asia wisdom in urban and rural development for the world.

A good PhD proposal is a prelude and requirement for a S2 docent to get a place to enrol into a PhD program at a university, local or abroad. It is also a requisite by sponsors of scholarship for them to fund the PhD study. Hence, it is essential for the docents to attend a structured program/workshop on how to prepare a good proposal.

The workshop will be conducted by Associate Professor Dr Ismail Mohamad and Associate Professor Dr Ismail Said from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM. This workshop is intended to equip the docents from Faculty of Science and Technology with the knowledge on how to prepare PhD research proposal. We would like to share our expertise and experience to UIN Alauddin Makassar. This is a free academic service from UTM and IIUM to docents of UIN Alauddin Makassar and neighbouring universities. This three-day workshop is aimed at S2 docents who are keen to read their PhD in 2018.

Dr Ismail Mohamad is teaching Mathematics at Faculty of Science, UTM, whereas Dr Ismail Said is teaching Landscape Architecture at Faculty of Built Environment, UTM. Both have been teaching at UTM for more than 32 years. Furthermore, Dr Ismail Said was an academic manager at the School of Graduate Studies in UTM from 2014 to 2016.

Dr Nurul Nadiah Sahimi is the Dean of Faculty of Education at Universiti Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur. Her area of expertise is on children’s environment and early childhood education.

Rapid Urbanization And Sustainable Development in Asia
Topik :

Cities and their metropolitan regions are at the leading edge of change in an era increasingly rapid globalization. Indeed, urban areas themselves are undergoing astounding transformations of scale and substance in terms of demographics, socioeconomics, culture, and politics. These changes prompt innovations in governance, including planning, that progressively incorporate aspects of sustainability and public participation. Regardless of issue, the urbanization process brings some of our most important and vexing development challenges.

The magnitude and dynamic nature of rapid urbanization in Asia is distinctive and demands innovative and novel examination and perspective. Whether it be issues of rural to urban migration, slums, infrastructure, housing, employment, or environment, amongst many other issues, the Asian city context is unique both within and across its entire geographic context. Globalization and technological developments serve to add complexity to urban issues and problems. At the same time, these developments also leverage new solutions to problems both old and new.

Sustainable development strategies, leveraged across all levels of governance, are clearly needed to address issues associated with Asian urbanization. With this in mind, the conference will broadly address leading topics surrounding this issue, including urban resilience, risk and disaster management, employment, urban poverty, urbanization in the era of ICT, urban planning & urban governance, urban futures & aspirations, land, urban development, & housing in Asia.
